Monday Bird Bites: Colby Rasmus and Sergio Santos to begin rehabbing this week

The Minnesota Twins are in town tonight to begin a three-game series against the Blue Jays. It will be interesting to see the turnout of Monday and Tuesday's games to see how being in first place, five games up, affects weekday evening attendance (Wednesday is an afternoon getaway day game). Thanks to various beat reporters on Twitter, here are tonight's lineups.

Minnesota's starting nine features a new face: Kendrys Morales, who just signed with the Twins two days ago. Unlike Stephen Drew, Morales doesn't have options remaining so the Twins aren't able to send him down to get him ready for the season. He will be wearing #17.

Shi Davidi reported thatColby Rasmus (who has been out since mid-May with a hamstring issue) is finally ready to begin rehab down in triple-A with the Bisons later this week. The Bisons will be starting a four-game series in Toledo on Thursday, so heads up, Jays fans in Windsor!

Alex Anthopoulos likes spreading the major league rehabilitation wealth, so Sergio Santos will be sent to the double-A Fisher Cats for his rehab stint, according to Ken Fidlin's reporting. Fidlin points out that the Fisher Cats will be playing Bowie this week, putting Santos geographically close to Baltimore, where the Blue Jays (and Tom Dakers) will be at the end of this week.

Richard Griffin was not arrested after he transported a trunk full of fertilizer across the US-Canada border.

Two knuckleballers will be pitching in the Blue Jays organization today. In addition to R.A. Dickey here in Toronto, Frank Viola III will be starting for the Lansing Lugnuts today after spending all season in extended spring training. Viola will be wearing "VIOLA 29" on his back, so unlike Robert Griffin III, he won't be wearing the "III" on his uniform. His father wore #29 in 1990 and 1991 during two All-Star years with the New York Mets. There has been a lot of discussion about the effect of wind for knuckleballs, so here are the roof statuses of both stadiums:

You can listen in to the Lugnuts game here starting at 7 Eastern.

Jose Bautista has moved past the legendary Mike Trout to the top spot in AL All-Star balloting.

Behind Canadian Borders: Catching up with the Blue Jays

We're back with our second Q&A with Bluebird Banter's Tom Dakers.

You may remember when we previously played the Blue Jays, that Tom Dakers of Bluebird Banter and I exchanged questions and answers as a way to preview the series. We're back again with a fresh set of questions. Let's get to it!

Toronto had a pair of picks in the first round of the draft this year. How does Bluebird Banter feel about their selections, and who did you think Toronto would be going after? Personally, I like the risk taken on Jeff Hoffman.

I'm very happy with the draft. I love the pick of Hoffman. It seems like all our pitchers end up on Dr. Andrew's table, just as well to get it over with early. It seems like almost every pitcher comes back as good as he was before going under the knife. The bad part is that he'll be pushed back a year, but if he would have been a top three choice before the surgery, picking him 9th should be good.

And Max Pentecost looks like he can stick as a catcher, and looks like he'll hit well enough to make us forget about the promise J.P. Arencibia once had. I also think we did good by picking Sean Reid-Foley, a right-handed pitcher, with our second round pick. Most thought he would be a first rounder.

Before the draft, most experts figured the Jays would pick shortstop Trea Turner and RHP Touki Toussaint, nothing against either of those two, but I'm happier with who we actually picked.

So many batters are off to good starts this year. Can Toronto put together enough pitching to make things interesting in August and September?

You know, I think we do have enough pitching, not that I would be against picking someone up before the trade deadline. We are 5.5 up on second place Baltimore, and 6 games up on the Yankees, at the moment, and it isn't like either of those two teams are terribly deep in starting pitchers.

So far, we've used 6 different pitchers in the 4 and 5 spots of the rotations. Brandon Morrowwas ineffective and then hurt. Dustin McGowan was inconsistent and now in the bullpen. Liam Hendriks made two of the luckiest starts I've ever seen. Now J.A. Happ and Marcus Stroman are holding down those two spots and, with any luck, should be able keep in the rotation until Alex Anthopoulos finds a trade he likes, or top prospect Aaron Sanchez is ready to take one of their spots.

Our team ERA was 4.64 in April, 3.74 in May and, so far in June, 2.71....I like that trend.

Jose Reyes hasn't really taken off quite yet. Is there another level for him yet, or are we seeing his true talent level at this point of his career?

Reyes has been much better the past month or so. He started the season with hamstring troubles, went on the DL and he really wasn't 100% when he came back to the team. Over his last 25 starts, he's hit .298/.360/.394 with 7 stolen bases. I'm hoping this is the Jose Reyes we'll see for the rest of the season. It's not a total coincidence that the team started winning when he started playing better.

Beyond setting the table for the big bats, he's a very happy, smiling, energetic guy. He seems to keep the his teammates loose and everyone in a good mood. That said, his range at short leaves a lot to be desired. But, if he continues to hit like he has of late, I'll put up with it.

Tell us about the pitchers the Twins will be facing in this series.

You get:

R.A. Dickey on Monday. Dickey has been, well, the polite way to say it is inconsistent. He had a pretty good May, going 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA, but he hasn't been able to put together a string of good starts. Part of it seems to be that manager John Gibbons leaves him in for 2 or 3 batters too many each start. Dickey will cruise through 5 innings and then the 6th he'll just lose it. Gibby seems tone deaf to tiny little signs that Dickey is tiring. They are subtle. Things like Dickey walking 3 guys in a row and balls rocketing off (and over) the outfield walls. Not everyone would notice those little things.

J.A. Happ has been much better this year. He's not one of my favorite pitchers, he tends to nibble at the corners (or generally nibble just off the corners) of the plate. Even on a good start he'll run up his pitch count quick, making a 5 inning start the norm. He's been a bit better this year, he seems to have picked up a couple of miles per hour on his fastball and he will, occasionally throw two or three pitches in a row that will find the strike zone. He is a surprising 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA as a starter, in 7 starts and has averaged 5.6 innings per start.

Marcus Stroman has had 2 great starts since his second call up this season. He was up earlier to help out in the bullpen, but was called up again, at the end of May, to join the rotation. In his two starts he's pitched 12 innings, allowed 2 runs, 12 hits, 2 walks with 13 strikeouts. His averaging 95mph on his fastball and mixes in a very nice slider and curve. If he's hitting his spots, he's very tough.

Be thankful you are missing Mark Buehrle.

Now that we're past the draft, the trade deadline is the next big hurdle in the season. Will the Jays be buyers or sellers? Could they take on salary down the stretch if they needed to?

GM Alex Anthopoulos tells us they could take on salary. I've stopped taking Alex at his word awhile ago. Apparently the players passed the hat around to raise money to try to sign Ervin Santana this spring. My feeling is that ownership allowed the team to raise payroll a ton last year, and the team tanked, so ownership wasn't all that inclined to give them a bunch more money this year, on the fool me once shame on you, fool me again, shame on me' philosophy.

With the team winning, and attendance looking better as the wins come, they might find some money.

Have you beaten the Yankees like I asked you to last time? Please say yes.

Ask me next week, we have a 3 game series against the Yankees in New York, starting next Monday. I'm going down for the games, I haven't seen new Yankee Stadium yet It will look that much better with a Blue Jays sweep. It's just our second series against the damn Yankees, we lost 2 of 3 in our home opening series against them. There isn't a team I enjoy beating more.

Walk off win for the Blue Jays

Twins 4 Blue Jays 5

Walk off wins are fun.

I thought this was going to be a long game, when I saw the first two Twins homer off R.A. Dickey, but Dickey righted things....at least until the 6th inning. From the 2nd to the 5th inning, RA allowed just 2 hits and no walks. The 6th was a bit of a problem. There was the one out triple, on a fly that Melky Cabrera dived for and really should have and then a hit batter on a pitch that, if it wasn't a strike, was darn close to the strike zone and that Oswaldo Arcia clearly leaned into. Then a Kendrys Morales walk and Dickey was out of the game, leaving with 1 out and the bases loaded.

Thankfully, Dustin McGowan came in and got Trevor Plouffe to hit into a double play. McGowan pitched the 7th, allowing a single and getting a double play ball hit back to him. Great work by Dustin. Aaron Loup pitched the 8th, giving up a lead off walk (those always score), but getting a double play to erase him and a strikeout to end the inning.

Casey Janssen pitched the 9th. He gave up a 1-out single but got a nice double play ball, unfortunately, Steve Tolleson couldn't get it out of his glove to turn it. Then it was Kevin Pillar's turn to dive for and miss a fly in left....he should have played it on the hop, but the turned a single into a double. A bloop double down the left field line, just out of reach of Brett Lawrie tied the game. Casey's second blown save, and second blown save cause by bad defense.

On offense we got a 3-run homer from Edwin Encarnacion and a solo homer from Jose Reyes.

The bottom of the 9th started well, Dioner Navarro walked and Erik Kratz pinch ran, but Anthony Gose strikeout trying to bunt. Jose Reyes singled to right and then Kevin Pillar went to 2 strikes before slicing a ball to right to win the game. Great job Pillar.

Jays of the Day are McGowan (.286 WPA), Pillar (.288), Reyes (.196) and Encarnacion (.263).

Suckage? Well Casey had the number (-.278), but that was on his defense. Gose (-.140) and Lind (-.103). I'm also giving one to Tolleson for the non-error error.

Pillar's dive really didn't cost us. If he had played the ball on the bounce, the runner would have scored on from first on the bloop double down the right field line.

Recap: Twins 4, Jays 5: Twins Comeback Falls Short

$

Twins rally for two in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but Jays walk it off in the bottom half.

Despite the Twins owning the lead and even coming back to tie the game, it wasn't enough as the Twins drop the opener of their nine-game road trip. Minnesota got on the board first with back-back home runs to lead off the ball game from Danny Santana and Brian Dozier. That's the first time that has happened since 2002.

Remember when Phil Hughes wore pinstripes for seven years? Remember when he gave up home runs left and right (no pun intended)? Clearly that demon has entered Ricky Nolasco and is pissing every one off. Now I know the Jays do nothing but hit bombs, but Nolasco has surrendered an AL leading 13 home runs. His ERA is 5.70.

Nolasco coughed up two long balls to Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Reyes, giving the Jays a 4-2 lead. Josh Willingham would rope a one-out triple in the sixth and the Twins would eventually load the bases, but Trevor Plouffe grounded into an inning ending double-play.

It wasn't until the ninth inning when the Twins were able to get to closer Casey Janssen. Kendrys Morales started the rally with a single, finishing the day by going 1-for-3  with a walk. Kurt Suzuki and Eduardo Escobar tied the game with back-back doubles. WOOOOO!

For some reasonMatt Guerrier began the ninth for a 2nd inning of work and led off the inning walking Dioner Navarro. Guerrier would get a punch out before Casey Fien would finish the game, but would not record a single out as the Jays walked it off on the back of consecutive singles from Jose Reyes and Kevin Pillar. And the Twins lost.

But Kendry Morales looked good, right? Joe Mauer went 0-for-4, dipping his average to .259. Many people have asked if he's had lingering back issues, but I think he's still feeling post-concussion like symptoms. Your thoughts TwinkieTown faithful?

Who's Up, Who's Down On the Blue Jays: Batters

Over the past 2 weeks the Blue Jays are 8-4, so you might expect a lot of up arrows but there are a few of our guys that weren't hitting over the past 2 weeks, fortunately others were amazing.. The batters hit .260/.331/.418 and averaged 4.5 runs per game.

Batters

Red_down_medium

Dioner NavarroDioner played in 11 of the 12 games, starting 9 of them. He hit .260/.289/.294 with 1 home runs, 2 RBI, 4 walks and 11 strikeouts. He hasn't hit much at all since April. I do wonder if a couple of weeks off wouldn't help him out. He is painfully slow. When they pinch run Erik Kratz for you, you know you are slow.

Blue_up_medium

Edwin Encarnacion

Edwin started 11 of the games. He hit .306/.457/.694 with 2 doubles, 4 home runs, 11 RBI, 10 walks and 6 strikeouts. He was AL Player of the Month in May, and he's hitting at least as good, so far, in June.

Red_down_medium

Juan Francisco

Juan played in 12 games, starting 10. He hit .171/.194/.371 with 4 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 0 walks and 12 strikeouts. He's been terrible at the plate for a month now. I wondered how long it would be until teams stopped throwing him fastballs, we now know the answer. Personally, I think it is time to send him back to Buffalo. I wonder how long it will take the Jays to notice he's stopped hitting. His defense at third is.....ok if he is hitting. He has no range but a strong arm. Fangraphs has him at a -6.2/150 this season (small sample size), which matches what I see. To me, he's got to hit to stay in the lineup and he hasn't hit in more than a month now.

Blue_up_medium

Jose Reyes

Jose started all 12 games. He hit .327/.364/.423, with 1 triple, 1 home run, 3 RBI, 3 steals, 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. He is fun to watch when he's hitting like this. He did have the terribly timed error and his range leaves lots to be desired, but he is an offensive force.

Arrow_around_3_medium

Brett Lawrie

Brett started all 12 games. He hit .267/.306/.467 with 3 home runs, 8 RBI, 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Not bad but I'd like better.

Red_down_medium

Melky Cabrera

Melky started all 12 games. Hit .235/.264/.392 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 4 RBI, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. If there is a piece of advise you could give a baseball player, it is 'always start the season hot'. If you do, it takes forever for people to notice you've cooled down. Melky and Juan are prime examples. He's been much better over his last 6 games, so, hopefully, he's turning things around again.

Red-cross-icon-1_medium

Colby Rasmus

Starting to rehab.

Blue_up_medium

Jose BautistaJose started all 12 games. Hit .357/.471/.643 with 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 8 RBI, 1 steal, 8 walks and 5 strikeouts. He's been consistently great all season, but the past two weeks have been even better. Add in the 2 9-3 put outs and there is very little to complain about. It's funny, last year we were losing and all the stories were about how Jose was a terrible leader. This year we are winning and he's suddenly a great leader. Funny how that works.

Blue_up_medium

Adam Lind

Adam played all 12 games, starting 10. Hit .306/.405/.417 with 4 doubles, 5 RBI, 6 walks and 5 strikeouts. Gibby doesn't get enough credit for being smart enough to platoon Adam.

Red_down_medium

Josh Thole

Played in 4 games, starting 3. Hit .000/.125/.000. Again guys, get off to a hot start and no one will notice when you stop hitting. Course this is only 7 at bats.

Red_down_medium

Steve Tolleson

Steve played in 11 games, starting just 2. Hit .182/.250/.182 with 1 RBI, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Again a really small sample, 11 at bats, but when you are a role player, that's what you get, do something with them. Had the bad not-an-error-because-baseball-rules-are-stupid play that cost us big last night.

Red_down_medium

Kevin Pillar

Played in 10 games, starting 2. Hit .111/.100/.111 with 1 hit (but a big hit), 2 RBI, 0 walks and 4 strikeouts. Again a small sample, 9 at bats. He's today's example of 'if you are going to dive to make a catch, you better make the catch'.

Red_down_medium

Anthony Gose

Anthony played in all 12 games, starting 10. .194/.256/.250 with 1 triple, 1 RBI, 1 steal. 1 caught, 3 walks and 11 strikeouts. Once again, if you get called up, make sure to get all to a fast start with the bat. Couldn't get the bunt down last night, that could have cost us.

Blue_up_medium

Erik Kratz

Played in 6 games, started 3. Hit .400/455/.400 with 2 RBI, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts. Again a small sample size, 10 at bats. I like him behind the plate. Filed under 'things you think you'll never hear at a baseball game: "Now pinch running, Erik Kratz", but he did the job.

Happy 22nd Birthday to Blue Jays fan Kate Upton

I just thought yall would want to know that model, actress, and Blue Jays fan Kate Upton turns 22 today. Well I don't know if she's a Blue Jays fan or not, but here she is sporting the Blue Jays alternate cap (which I love) at a game sometime this spring with Lansing Lugnuts knuckleballer Frank Viola III.

The third Viola is good friends with Justin Verlander and Upton. In fact, if you do a Google Image search for "frank viola iii", You basically get a collage of of Verlander and Upton. Last year, a birthday tweet sent by Upton to Viola caused a bit of controversy, when people (read: tabloid journalists) read too much into it. I'm sure an Upton visit would do wonders for the Lugnuts' marketing department, and she'll still be just a hop away from Detroit.

Speaking of Frank Viola III, he made his first start in the Blue Jays organization last night for the Lansing Lugnuts, going four innings, striking out and walking four (along with a hit by pitch). He gave up no runs and just three hits. He even struck out Jamie Moyer's son Dillon. His knuckleball was "legit" according to Chad Hillman, who saw the game live:

According to Hillman, his knuckleball is not all that "angry," sitting at the mid-to-high 60s (although there were a few in the mid-70s) with a low-to-mid 80s fastball. However, he seems to have used his fastball in predictable situations (like when he's behind).

In any case, happy birthday, Kate, and GO JAYS GO!

Game #66 Preview: Blue Jays vs. Twins

The Twins take on the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre again this evening, as J.A. Happ goes up against right-hander Kevin Correia. If you have a really good memory, then you'll recall that this exact same pitching matchup took place on September 7th of last season, with the Blue Jays winning 11-2 thanks to a five-run first inning with a few home runs against Correia. This year Correia has a 6.11 ERA, but a FIP of 4.21 that is in line with his career average. The problem has been a BABIP of .343 and a 60.3% strand rate, which are magnified in Correia's case because he mainly pitches to contact.

The California native throws fastballs, sinkers, and cutters mainly with changeups and curveballs making up his off-speed stuff. He relies pretty heavily on his defence because there isn't a lot of whiffs being produced with his fairly mediocre stuff. Against same-handed batters 86% of his pitches thrown are either fastballs, sinkers, or cutters that all have pretty similar velocity making it a challenge to fool the hitters with only a little bit of horizontal movement:

Kevin Correia is pretty split neutral so the Blue Jays should just run out the best lineup they can.

Blue Jays sign 5th round pick Lane Thomas

The Blue Jays announced that they have made their third signing from this year's draft Lane Thomas, our 5th round pick. He's a center fielder out of Bearden High School in Tennessee.

The interesting part is that he signed way over slot:

Somewhere they are going to have to save that $407,000. I figured 2nd round pick Sean Reid-Foley was going to be over slot.

So far the Jays have announced the signing of  Thomas, Matt Morgan (4th round pick) and Justin Shafer (8th round pick. The bonuses for Morgan and Shafer aren't known, the Jays try to keep that stuff quiet.

I'll be happy when I hear our first round picks are signed. That's where the problem has been in the past. The quicker they sign the better I'll feel.

Not much interesting happened on a light night. Kris Bryant did not hit a home run tonight, so there's that.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs had their campsite ransacked by the Fresno Grizzlies (Giants), 3-2.

It was a good start for Kyle Hendricks, but he took the loss anyway. Hendricks allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out six and didn't walk anyone.

Second baseman Arismendy Alcantara was 2 for 5 with a triple and two runs scored. His nine triples lead the PCL.

Center fielder Matt Szczur was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Right fielder Casper Wells went 2 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

Off Day. They take on Mississippi at home tomorrow.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were blue after losing to the Dunedin Blue Jays, 11-4.

Felix Pena's streak of eleven straight starts of allowing one earned run or fewer ended in a big way tonight, as Pena got hammered for nine runs on ten hits in only four innings. Two of those ten hits were home runs. Pena struck out two and walked one.

Catcher Chadd Krist clubbed a solo home run in the third inning, his first of the season. Krist was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 5 with a run scored. DH Rock Shoulders was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Kane County Cougars

Rained out in Peoria. Doubleheader tomorrow.

Game #67 Preview: Blue Jays vs. Twins

$

0

The Blue Jays look to avoid losing two straight series by winning an afternoon rubber match against the Twins today. An interesting pitching matchup sees youngster Marcus Stroman face off against the righty Phil Hughes in a Wednesday getaway game with a first pitch of 12:37. Hughes faced the Blue Jays in his third start of the season, going five innings allowing four earned runs (which he did three times in a row to start the year) and striking out seven hitters. Since that game Hughes has only gotten stronger, allowing more than three earned runs only once, in his last start against Houston.

As was mentioned in the April 15 preview, Hughes has scrapped has poor slider in favour of a cutter and it's paid off. His walk rate is at a career low (2.6%) and the fly ball pitcher has allowed fewer home runs than usual, in part due to a 6.8% HR/FB rate. He's also started to pound the zone with his simple fastball and cutter approach, keeping hitters on their toes and never giving them a chance to get comfortable in the batter's box. You can see how his cutter abruptly replaced his slider at the beginning of this season:

Brooksbaseball-chart__16__medium

So it looks like Hughes has finally found a collection of pitches that work for him. Even though he's pounding the strike zone, the righty seems pretty opposed to challenging left-handed hitters inside, preferring to stay high and away.

Hopeful Lineup

Phil Hughes is absolutely owning left-handed hitters this year (.174 BA against), but it's still a pretty small sample size to get too crazy about the reverse splits.

Bob Elliot tweeted this:

So now we have signed our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th round picks. Wells was Baseball America's 119th draft prospect. He's a left-handed pitcher, can hit 93 with his fastball, has a good curveball. Blue Jays Recall Bobby Korecky, Option Kevin Pillar

$
0
0

The Blue Jays added another arm to the roster this morning, recalling Bobby Korecky from the Buffalo Bisons and optioning outfielder Kevin Pillar back down. It's likely in preparation for the return of Colby Rasmus fairly soon and the fact that the bullpen might need a little bit of help after J.A. Happ's short outing last night.

Kevin Pillar appeared in 24 games with the big league squad during Rasmus' absence hitting .243 with an OBP of .237 thanks to having no walks, but one sacrifice fly. He's proven himself to be an okay fourth or fifth outfielder, but not a lot more than that. Anthony Gose looks to get all the starts in centre field until Colby Rasmus returns from his rehab assignment.

On the flip side, Bobby Korecky returns to the Blue Jays after being DFA'ed (but not taken off the 40-man roster) to make room in Toronto for Marcus Stroman a few weeks ago. The righty has pitched 33.1 innings in Buffalo plus 1.1 in Toronto and allowed precisely one earned run, which was a solo home run. His sub-.200 BABIP definitely helps his stat line, but Korecky certainly deserves a chance to show he can be a viable part of the Blue Jays bullpen.

UPDATE (Minor Leaguer)

The beat spoke with John Gibbons who said that Kevin Pillar was the one optioned because of the lack of lefties in the upcoming games, and that another move will be made after the game today. That likely means another pitcher--the beat is guessing Korecky, but I think Chad Jenkins is certainly a possibility, having thrown so many pitches--will be sent down, likely for an outfielder like Darin MastroianniKenny Wilson is the other outfielder who is eligible for recall.

Korecky cleared optional waivers when he was sent down so he doesn't have to go through that process again within the current waiver period, which ends on July 31.

Pillar was hitting .243/.237/.324 in 37 at bats with the Blue Jays. He had a walkoff hit the other night.

Bobby Korecky is doing a great job in Buffalo, he's allowed just 1 hit in his last 6 appearances. He has a 0.26 ERA at Buffalo, 17 hits, 9 walks and 35 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. It is his second time up with the Jays this season, he pitched 1.1 clean in his one appearance.

So I guess we are back to the 8-man bullpen, I don't understand why. I guess Todd Redmond and Chad Jenkins might not be available today but still there should be lots of arms down in the pen. Oh well, don't try to out guess them.

Bye Kevin, I'm sure we'll see you again. Welcome Bobby, hope it is a long stay this time.

Twins 7 Blue Jays 2

They better find the bats again quick, cause I'm on my way to Baltimore tomorrow to watch baseball (I'm not sure what else there is to do in Baltimore) and I don't want to watch this stuff.

Anyway, we had a hard time scoring again. We didn't score until the 8th today, when we got our 2 runs.

Marcus Stroman gave up a 2-run homer in the first, then went 5 more innings allowing just 1 run. He did give up some hard hit balls, but, if our offense was rolling, we'd have been happy with the start. He gave up 9 hits, no walks with 4 strikeouts. Not good enough when we aren't score.

Bobby Korecky had a rough/unlucky inning, he had two infield singles, both times the play at first base was very close. Then a walk and a double to score three. His second inning of work went much better, but by then it didn't matter. Brett Cecil pitched the 9th and gave up another run.

No Jays of the Day today.

Suckage. Edwin had the number (-.139). He has been so good, he should be allowed an off day.

I'm in the US for a couple of weeks, so I won't be around here all that much but everyone else is here for your dining and dancing pleasure. And, if you have been thinking about doing a FanPost, this would be a great time for it.

We had a pretty decent GameThread, 721 comments, considering it was an awful game and it was a mid-week day game. I led us to defeat.

Aaron Sanchez promoted to the Buffalo Bisons

$

Blue Jays top prospect Aaron Sanchez has been promoted to the triple-A Buffalo Bisons, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. The first round pick from 2010 has been having a good season with double-A New Hampshire, recording a 3.82 ERA (4.20 FIP) over 14 starts, allowing just under 1.4 hits and walks per inning pitched.

Sanchez, who turns 22 on Canada Day, started his double-A career strongly this season. There were a couple of rocky starts in the middle of the ride--including an outing where he was rocked for six runs in the first (only three earned, but he was taken out after reaching his inning pitch limit of 29)--but overall people who saw him with the Fisher Cats thought he looked pretty good. Sanchez has had trouble with an elevated walk rate (14%) this season, so it will be interesting to see how his stuff does against more mature triple-A hitters.

I am absolutely sure Sanchez's promotion will be a topic of discussion on this Friday's Around The Nest podcast (which you can catch right here on Bluebird Banter), where we will hear reactions from both the Fisher Cats' and Bisons' broadcasters.

This Sunday, Sanchez went 6.2 innings and struck out 7, walking just one and giving up just one run against the Erie SeaWolves, reaching 90 pitches. If he is kept on his regular rotation he is due to start this Friday against Toledo.

It's been a while--it's been two years since "the Lansing three" year--but finally, Sanchez is now just one step away from the major leagues, but he will need to be added to the 40-man roster first.

UPDATE

Mark Zwolinski of the Star reports that Sanchez will be starting this Saturday at Toledo, so head down there, Windsorites!

Neil Wagner visits Dr. James Andrews and Blue Jays minor moves: Shawn Hill, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Adron Chambers, Colby Rasmus, Matt Tuiasosopo

Move tracker summary chart at the end of the article!

We had hoped that it wouldn't happen, but it did. Neil Wagner made a visit to Dr. James Andrews, the Tommy John surgery expert, and was prescribed with three weeks' rest, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. If you recall, Wagner exited from a Buffalo Bisons game on June 1 after launching a pitch to the backstop which allowed a runner to score from third. He was immediately sent down to Florida for evaluations for his "forearm tightness", which was later upgraded to "forearm strain," definitely symptoms that can lead to Tommy John surgery.

Former All-Star Ricky Romero continues to be on the Bisons' disabled list with a right calf injury, but of course, the Bisons received a boost in their starting rotation with the promotion ofAaron Sanchez from double-A on Thursday morning.

Minor Moves

The Blue Jays organization lost two Commonwealthers this week: Canadian Shawn Hillwas traded to the White Sox organization and Australian Ryan Rowland-Smithwas released.

Hill, a 33-year-old from Mississauga, last pitched in the majors with the 2012 Blue Jays, throwing a clean three-inning relief outing. He had signed a minor league contract with the Jays this spring, and has been splitting the season between double- and triple-A. He was demoted to New Hampshire after walking five in 2.2 innings of relief, and had a poor start on Friday with the Fisher Cats. However, the White Sox were interested enough to send the Blue Jays a bit of cash in exchange for the rights to Hill. He has been assigned to the triple-A Charlotte Knights.

Rowland-Smith, 31, signed as a minor-league free agent with the Diamondbacks and was placed on the 25-man roster to start the season, joining the club in their trip to Sydney. He appeared in just over seven big league innings and recorded a 4.91 ERA before he was designated for assignment on April 18. He elected free agency instead of accepting an outright, and signed a minor league contract with Toronto a few days later, with a June 1 opt-out if he could land a major league job elsewhere. Having getting limited innings in Buffalo, the opt-out date came-and-went, and he found himself released a half-month later.

The Aussie, who has an awesome Twitter handle (@hyphen18) was not exactly happy with his dismissal (well, why would anyone?):

The home run refers to a Tyler Collins shot against him on June 6. He now regrets electing free agency:

Another farmhand, 22-year-old infielder Kellen Sweeneywas also released yesterday by the Blue Jays. He was Toronto's second-round draft pick in 2010. His struggled at the plate in the higher levels, recording a 24% strikeout rate in Lansing last season, hitting just .185/.269/.284. Sweeney had spent most of 2014 on the disabled list, and was only activated in mid-May. He saw limited action in advanced-A Dunedin and had a slow start to the season, hitless in his first four games. However, he had been riding a four-game hit streak prior to his release.

Starter Radhames Liz demoted back to New Hampshire after two lackluster starts in Buffalo to replace Sanchez's spot in the rotation.

After the Florida State League All-Star Game on June 14, we likely will see former Dunedin Blue Jays be promoted to New Hampshire. On the rotation side, there is 24-year-old Taylor Cole and 21-year old Daniel Norris, both of whom have been fantastic for the D-Jays this season. Closer Arik Sikula, 25, may also be due for a call-up. Forgot he was already up in New Hampshire (thanks, @StewartRogers).

UPDATE

Thanks to e&n4e for mentioning it in the comments: the Blue Jays have acquiredAdron Chambers from the Houston Astros for Alejandro Solarte and Will Dupont according to Astros.com's Brian McTaggart.

Excuse me for not knowing Adron Chambers is but here are some facts I found from a Google-type search:

  • He is 27 and from Pensacola.
  • He is an outfielder.
  • He has had 99 MLB plate appearances over three seasons with the Cardinals, including in 2011, so he has a World Series ring.
  • He once posted a picture of his finger injury after dislocating it on Opening Day this year with triple-A Oklahoma City sliding into second base. DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK TO SEE THAT PICTURE. DO NOT BLAME ME OR BLUEBIRD BANTER OR SB NATION IF YOU CLICK THIS LINK TO SEE HIS SCREWED UP FINGER AND THROW UP ON YOUR COMPUTER. PARENTS, DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN TO CLICKTHIS LINK TO SEE THE PICTURE OF HIS GRUESOME FINGER.
  • Chambers returned to the lineup on May 11 and has been playing every day for the RedHawks, hitting .281/.356/.416 with two homers in 102 plate appearances (14% K, 10% BB). Oklahoma plays in the more neutral former-American Association part of the Pacific Coast League, so only three of his 25 games this year have been played in the traditional hitter-friendly Pacific Division parks.

Our friends at Crawfish Boxes have profiled the pieces going to the Astros, so I won't.

UPDATE 2

As expected, Colby Rasmuswill start his rehab with the Bisons tonight in Toledo.

UPDATE 3: MOAR MOVES!!!

Aaron Sanchez's Fisher Cats teammate Melky Mesa (full name Melquisedec Mesa), who was acquired from the Royals in a trade in May, was also promoted to the Bisons to join their outfield corps.

Matt Tuiasosopo was dealt to the Charlotte Knights (on a separate transaction from Shawn Hill) for cash. Tuiasosopo was a late-spring waiver claim from the Diamondbacks and he was successfully outrighted before the start of the season. He has struggled quite a bit at the plate with the Bisons, hitting just .206/.289/.271 with the Herd.

Along with Liz, outfielder Kenny Wilson and reliever Gregory Infante were demoted to New Hampshire.

Game #68 Preview: Blue Jays @ Orioles

$

0

A big road trip gets started tonight in Baltimore as the Blue Jays face the Orioles. Staff ace Mark Buehrle gets the start for Toronto against highly-rated 23-year-old Kevin Gausman. After a rough rookie season Gausman has only got two starts at the major league level in 2014, most recently five days ago on June 7th. In that start against Oakland, the righty went seven innings allowing four hits and one earned run.

The LSU grad was drafted fourth overall in the 2012 draft and moved quickly through the Orioles system, making his debut against the Blue Jays on May 23 of last season. He throws his fastball about 70% of the time, averaging about 96 mph, while his slider and splitter are his main off-speed pitches. He messes around with his pitches a little bit and sometimes throws a huge sinker and a changeup that's a little less volatile than his splitter.

Brooksbaseball-chart_medium

While his fastball doesn't get many whiffs over half of hitter's swings against the heater are fouled off thanks to the massive velocity coming out of the 6'3' frame of Gausman. The splitter/changeup is his go-to pitch against lefties and he tends to throw it ahead it the count to get a swinging strike.

Gausman-3-rasmus_medium

via cdn.fangraphs.com

All in all, if Gausman is spotting his fastball then he is very difficult to hit against. On the other hand, if the Blue Jays are zoning in on his fastball, then Gausman will struggle to fool them with his off-speed pitches.

Hopeful Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes SS
  2. Melky Cabrera LF
  3. Jose Bautista RF
  4. Edwin Encarnacion 1B
  5. Adam Lind DH
  6. Dioner Navarro C
  7. Brett Lawrie 2B
  8. Juan Francisco 3B
  9. Anthony Gose C

Orioles beat Blue Jays 4-2 as Toronto's slump continues

Blue Jays 4 @ Orioles 2

Despite a last-minute desperation challenge on the last play of the game, the Blue Jays fell to the Orioles 4-2 to continue their recent slump.  They have now lost five of their last seven.

Mark Buehrle followed the recent starters' convention and gave up two quick runs on a Delmon Young two-run line-drive homer to left. The Blue Jays weren't shut out, so that's a plus... Melky Cabrera had an RBI single and Edwin Encarnacion scored Jose Bautista on a ground out, but that was it for Toronto.

The challenge came when Darin Mastroianni grounded hit a ground ball to J.J. Hardy at short, who forced out Steve Tolleson at second base. Jonathan Schoop turned and threw to first to end the game on an apparent double play. It look close live, but replays clearly showed that Mastroianni was out by a half-step.

I didn't see too much of the game and have to run now, so I have crowdsourced the recap tonight:

From TFSML:

Well the Jays were really great
but not so much late
The team can’t hit
the offense is (redacted)
and Gregg Zaun is a big fat twit

A man named Dankers traveled
Down to B-more town
He saw the Jays lose
He drank much booze
and had lots of crabcakes for dinner

The Jays are the best!
Better then all the rest
But lately they’ve let down your mum
and there offense stinks like your bum
They aren’t playing to up to scratch
regression is a major beeatch

From MjwW (writing in the style of e.e. cummings?):

there once was a team in blue
their bats continued to be "eww"
buehrle mostly did his thing
but the O’s got their swing
hopefully the bats are back in a few

there once was a batter named Ed
in may every ball was dead red
but now it’s june
he’s in a bit of a swoon
and all the bats seem like they’re dead

there once was a pitcher named buerhle
when he starts everybody leaves early
he turned in a decent start
but the bats fell apart
and everyone at BBB is left surly

there once was a game called by buck
the bats failed to produce balls well struck
the jays scored two
which failed by a few
that seems to just be their luck

From erik.t:

If gerse were still here
He’d drink 5 more beer
Go down to his den
And multiply the strike tracker by 10

From ABsteve:

This game was quite dreary
it’s such a shame
my vision is blurry
I drink for the pain
I keep telling myself it could be worse
with Dankers in town
the starter’s unhurt

Thank you all for helping.

Jays of the Day! TFSML, MjwW, erik.t, and ABsteve get honorary Jays of the Day awards.

Suckage Jays: Mark Buehrle (-.140 WPA), Dioner Navarro (-.115), Darrin Mastroianni (-.111), and Edwin Encarnacion (-.095).
